Almost two months have passed since the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent and Gotham City is still struggling to cope with the loss of such an inspiring public official, his battle against organized crime was seen as the first legitimate ray of light to shine on through the bleak darkness cast by the shadow of the underworld and it's activities, and in his passing many have begun to lose hope in the fact that Gotham will ever be wrested from the grip of the mob, that their influence and dominion over the city will ever be ended.
The situation is made even more grim by the revelation that another of the city's heroes, the masked vigilante known only as "the Batman" is currently an outlaw, hounded by the police. He stands accused of committing several murders, murders that were in actuality committed by the deranged Dent, who, in his last days, had snapped from the stress and trauma caused by the death of his partner, Rachel Dawes, as well as the scarring of his face. Seeking to take justice into his own hands, he punished those he saw as responsible for Rachel's death and his disfigurement.
After a confrontation at the site of Rachel's death, Two-Face fell to his doom, leading to the newly-promoted Commissioner James Gordon to come to a reluctant agreement with Batman. In order to save Dent's reputation and preserve what little hope his example and his deeds had inspired, the murders had to be pinned on Batman, he had to take the fall.
Now, the Gotham Police Department actively hunts the Batman while at the same time trying to combat the new rise in criminal activity. Although the mob had been hit hard thanks to the actions of Dent, Batman and the efforts of Gordon's Major Crime's Unit, not to mention the acts committed by the Joker in his efforts to gain complete control over the Gotham underworld, they have had time and space to recover, able to gain some breathing room thanks to the Police putting so much effort into hunting the Batman.
Not to mention the old gangs and power-bases have begun to become overtaken by new players, criminals and psychopaths along the lines of the Joker. A struggle is currently underway for complete control of Gotham's underworld, "the freaks" versus "the mob", and by the signs of things, the freaks are winning.
Trying his best to stem the rising tide of criminality while simultaneously evading the police, Batman is in a difficult position. As Bruce Wayne he tries to do what he can to provide public support and funding to the Gotham Police Department, hoping that it will help to bring order to Gotham once more, as well as trying to nurture and encourage the publics hopes for a crime-free Gotham.
The threat that the Joker presented has been neutralized with his incarceration, but for how long? With crime back on the rise along with instances of irrational, motiveless acts of violence becoming more and more common, it's obvious that the worst has yet to come for Gotham City. Its citizens look for an icon, a new source of hope to lead them through the increasingly dark times.
Whatever the case may be, the real battle for Gotham is about to begin...
Gotham City Chronicles is based on the Christopher Nolan series of Batman films and is set just after The Dark Knight. While the RPG deals with Batman and his war on crime, it isn't limited to this, dealing with the Police, the mob and ordinary people and their struggles, it's very much about Gotham as a city and the people who live there, men and women just trying to get by in an uncertain time.
So whether you're a die-hard Batman fan, you've seen the films or even if you've never even experienced any of that before and just want to give the Rp a shot, feel free to join and play a part in the drama unfolding in Gotham City, either as a canon or completely original character of your own design.
